PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to provide technical support to all county offices relating to personal computer and mainframe computing, including software, hardware, networking, Internet, program development and training.
Bachelor’s Degree, two (2) years of college course work or vocational/technical degree with emphasis in Network Technology, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related field; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving personal computer customization, personal computer installation, and personal computer operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must posses and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Assembles and installs personal computers; installs personal computer software, hardware, and network adapters; installs workstations and configures address settings; installs standalone printers and printer software; configures printers for use as system or session printers; installs network software and configures Ethernet adapters to connect with AS/400; installs/configures SNA communications control units, patch panels, and hubs; installs/configures Twinax and Token Ring printers.
Researches error messages in numerous software vendors’ website knowledge bases.
Provides input and/or performs research on equipment purchases.
Serves as technical resource for department heads and their staff; coordinates with system operators for addition of new devices and changes in configurations; coordinates computer repairs and software/hardware vendors and product technical support personnel; coordinates with departments on locations for new wiring and equipment needs/locations; orders repair services as needed.
Diagnoses/repairs problems in internal/external communications; troubleshoots error messages with control units, terminals, personal computers, and printers; troubleshoots conflicts in/between wiring connections, ancillary devices, peripherals, and/or motherboard and attached components; traces problems in communications starting at patch panel and ending at wall plate; troubleshoots Internet connectivity problems.
Performs various technical tasks in support of computer operations; assists users with home page design; assigns IP addresses to ensure all users who use firewall for Internet access work properly; creates Internet accounts and configures personal computers for online with ISP’s. Sets up and configures Internet POP3 mail accounts; downloads updated drivers for use on personal computers; sets up remote locations to connect to network via SDLC adapter and DSU/CSU; sets up mini Ethernet and LAN’s using TCP/IP protocols, to include assigning users, passwords, work groups, mail, and privileges; upgrades flash BIOS levels on personal computers; utilizes FTP and IRC for file transfer and information exchange; terminates wiring at wall jack and patch panel; makes and/or uses custom-length patch cables; maps network drives and assigned network printers; updates wiring maps and hardware file to reflect changes or new installations; writes batch files and macros.
Operates various computer systems, peripheral equipment, and office equipment, such as personal computers, laptop computers, printers, monitors, terminals, servers, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, modems, scanners, network adapters printer sharing devices, testing instruments, multi meter, cables, adapter cards, copiers, and facsimile machines; enters commands into computer system to clear computer system, start operations, correct errors, operate peripheral equipment, and perform related functions; enters, retrieves, reviews or modifies data in computer programs or operating systems.
Install, configures, loads, delivers, and/or moves various hardware and peripheral equipment; installs software programs.
Test equipment; identifies data errors, line failures, and equipment malfunctions; initiates appropriate action to correct errors, recover data, and obtain maintenance; performs general/preventive maintenance tasks; performs data backups onto tape, diskette or other media; stores backups in secured location; contacts service/support representatives and provides information concerning operational and/or mechanical problems as appropriate.
Monitors working conditions of equipment; performs computer maintenance tasks, such as loading paper into printers, clearing paper jams, or replacing printer ribbons and toner cartridges; performs preventative maintenance and cleaning of equipment as needed.
Inventories personal computers and checks serial numbers for location accuracy; records serial numbers and labels personal computers; assists in monitoring inventory of departmental supplies, tools and equipment; initiates purchase of new or replacement materials; unpacks and installs personal computers.
Maintains logs/documentation of system operations, modifications, maintenance, and other activities.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, address configuration worksheets, wiring maps, purchase orders, product information, technical support documentation, publications, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Provides information, training, and assistance to users regarding computer operations, procedures, problems, software functions, upgrades, and other related issues.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, users, other departments, vendors, outside companies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Maintains a working knowledge of a variety of computer operating systems and software programs, which may include word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, networking, emulation, communications, utilities, diagnostic, or other programs.
Maintains an awareness of new products trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
Provides on-call support as scheduled to assist users with technical problems involving equipment, production, or software, to include making after-hours return trips to the computer center or other departments; troubleshoots and/or resolves problems.
Proficient in all aspects of LAN communications including wireless system.
Extensive knowledge of TCP/IP environment.
Performing network hardware/software updates & upgrades.
Designing & implementing LAN’s and WAN’s for a variety of sites.
Develops and implements network security and integrity.
Develops and coordinates network replacement plan.
Maintains network maps of all sites.
Supervision may be exercised over part-time network employees as well as Internship candidates from local colleges.
Performs other related duties as required.

Has general knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Management Information Services Department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Computer Repair Technician. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including voltmeter, LAN wire tester, sniffer, cable repair tools and various computer and diagnostic equipment. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for heavy work.
