PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to undergo the necessary class room and on-the-job training in fire prevention, fire suppression, public fire education, emergency medical care and equipment maintenance.
High school diploma or GED. State firefighter certification within 12 months of hire. Must possess a valid Georgia Class “C” Driver’s License and obtain a Class “F” or higher Georgia Driver’s License within 3 months of hire. Must pass an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) class offered by the department within 18 months of hire. Must successfully obtain NPQ FF1, NPQ Hazardous Materials Operations, and Georgia Vehicle Extrication certifications within 12 months of hire. Must participate in assessment lab consisting of physical agility test, written exam and oral interview prior to hire.

Responds with crew on emergency, accident, fire, and EMS calls.
Performs fire control/suppression duties; administers first aid and basic life support to patients.
Conducts salvage and overhaul of premises after fire is extinguished.
Conducts business and hydrant inspections.
Attends training sessions to learn proper methods, procedures, and techniques used in fire prevention, fire suppression, hazardous materials identification, public fire safety education, and emergency medical care.
Studies and participates in equipment use training.
Maintains apparatus and fire station and all equipment assigned to that station.
Fill out and maintain reports and records pertaining to hydrants, hoses, equipment, and all calls responded to by his/her assigned station.
Participates in fire drills, public education programs, and fire prevention inspections.
Must adhere to all rules, regulations, guidelines, and procedures as set forth by the Houston County Board of Commissioners and Houston County Fire Department.
Conduct any other duties as assigned by the Chief, Assistant Chief, or Shift Commanders of the department.

TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to operate a variety of departmental equipment which includes pumper, hand/power tools, ladders, hoses, breathing apparatus, protective clothing, emergency medical supplies, computer, rescue tools, etc. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of moderate to vigorous/heavy work.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things including standard operating procedures, maps, safety bulletins, logbooks, fuel reports, employee manual, IFSTA/EMT manuals, etc.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange medical, emergency, and safety information. Includes communicating with supervisors, co-worker, law enforcement personnel, and the general public.
LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires ability to read a variety of informational and technical documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures. Requires the ability to write reports and essays with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting motion or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DIFFERENTIATION: May require the ability to discern color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. The worker needs to relate to people in situations involving more than giving or receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.
